A small foundation that does four things carefully beats a large one that does forty things briefly. These are the areas the family knows enough about to be genuinely helpful in.

Most philanthropy fails at the same place business does: it arrives with a plan, stays a year, and leaves before anything compounds. We would rather back a small number of people for a long time.
